  Hired a car in France recently with Avis. Unfortunately I was scammed and have had no response from customer service (12 days and counting).

  The agent set the car pickup time to several hours earlier than the actual time which has resulted in me being charged for an extra day rental when I returned the car. I can prove my flight was in the air at the stated pickup time and fortunately I also retained the card machine receipt when I paid the deposit which shows the actual pickup time.

  If I’ve not received a response from Avis after 30 days, I’ll be claiming the extra paid back from Amex.

    I made a rookie mistake at Avis Edinburgh airport of dropping a car off and not getting paperwork to confirm it had been returned. It was a work hire, so had full insurance, so wasn’t concerned about dents etc. Despite them spamming me with messages saying in effect I’d stolen the car and that they would notify the police. It was impossible to get hold of anyone to try and resolve. Took days to eventually sort out, didn’t receive any response to two written complaints. I now avoid Avis like the plague.

    Europcar in South Africa (Jobourg).

    Left the car, somebody checked it and said it was all good. Then went pick up an internal flight.

    Two day later I get an email saying a light is broken and they will charge me for it.

    The contract said my responsibility ended when I returned the car but Europcar ZA was adamant they could find damage “anytime”.

    Eventually had Europcar Europe help me with the refund because the emails to the ZA office are worth of a thread of their own.

    Had a similar thing with Avis Gibraltar – they chose to not book the car back in for hours, resulting in a whole day extra charge. Rejected my complaint on the basis that I signed a hire agreement which says they can charge for extra days! I’m not done with this complaint yet.

    Avis Anchorage – car sold as an upgrade was not clean and had a damp food stench inside.

    Avis UK – corporate rental was delivered a whole day late, obviously I had to make other arrangements – but that didn’t stop Avis charging and refusing to refund.

    😂 that’s a very absolute statement for something so incorrect. On many many dates there are basic UK properties (e.g. HGI hatton cross) for 30k points/£120 points cost… and cash prices are £130 and up (for a comparatively flexible rate).
    Thats just a low key example to accompany Rob’s major example. I have also made substantial savings by swapping my Conrad las vegas, and Waldorf the palm bookings from cash to points (on the last points offer)…
    3 nights over Easter was £1000 on points or £1300 cash..

    Munich last week (during Oktoberfest) for a last minute booking. I could pay 50k points, at a cost of around £200 to buy. Or pay around €430 cash at the same hotel. Very little else available in the city at the time.
