One interesting and often-forgotten benefit of the American Express Business Gold card and the American Express Business Platinum card is annual Dell credit. It’s a strong benefit, especially for American Express Business Gold where the card is free for Year 1.
As a reminder:
- Business Platinum holders get £150 of Dell credit per year – £75 to spend between 1st January and 30th June and £75 to spend between 1st July and 31st December – apply here, review here
- Business Gold holders get £100 of Dell credit per year – £50 to spend between 1st January and 30th June and £50 to spend between 1st July and 31st December – apply here, review here (this card is FREE for the first year so it really is £100 of free money to spend at Dell)
You MUST opt-in via this page of the American Express website before making your first Dell purchase. Once you have opted in once, you don’t need to do it again for subsequent purchases.
The six month periods run from January to June and July to December. This means that if you place a Dell order now to use up your allowance, you can place another in two weeks when it is January and the credit resets.
If you are thinking of signing up for an American Express Business Gold or American Express Business Platinum card, there may still be time to sign up and make use of the current Dell credit before the end of December.
The American Express Business Gold card has an annual fee of £195 from Year 2, but is free in Year 1. The American Express Business Platinum card has an annual fee of £650 but has valuable benefits including a £200 annual Amex Travel credit.
How can you use your Dell credit?
Dell is best known for its XPS range of laptops. You can see details here. Rhys swears by his XPS 15 in the HfP office and I had an XPS 13 for many years.
If you don’t need a new computer at the moment, take a look here at the ‘Accessories’ section of the Dell site.
Dell sells a range of laptop bags, briefcases, messenger bags, laptop sleeves and backpacks – see this page of their website.
The picture below is what I bought with my January to June 2022 credit – an Alienware gaming mouse for my son. It is £70 which was handy for my £75 of Business Platinum credit.
Rhys benefitted from my WInter 2021 credit (a spare power cord for his XPS 15, to save him carrying it to and from the office). For Winter 2022, I offered it to Sinead and she chose this:
It’s a funky travel mouse (click here):
“Your on-the-go workday becomes more portable than ever with this lightweight twistable mouse featuring multi-device connectivity that easily stows in any bag or travel case.”
At the time I bought it for her, the price was a convenient £74 including free delivery so it made maximum use of the £75 credit from my Business Platinum card. The price is now down to £54 so it is a good option for Business Gold cardholders too.
For my Spring 2023 credit I bought a new laptop power cord, because my existing seven year old one was starting to play up.
For my Winter 2023, Katie – who is covering for Sinead’s maternity leave next year – wanted a slightly scary pink mouse (only because the black version was out of stock!) and a rucksack. No bother, I got both for under the £75 cashback cap.
If you’re happy with an end-of-line or refurbished item, the credit also works on purchases from the Dell Outlet site here.
You may get an extra 10% back ….
Many American Express Business accounts are currently targetted for a second Dell cashback offer – 10% back on purchases up to £1,000.
Based on previous experience, this will double up with the Dell £50 / £75 credit deal. This means that you will actually make a profit on your order if you spend under £50 (Business Gold) or under £75 (Business Platinum)!
Other benefits from Business Gold and Business Platinum
Of course, the Dell credit isn’t the only reason to get either the American Express Business Gold card and American Express Business Platinum cards.
Both cards come with attractive sign-up bonuses. Currently you’ll receive:
- 20,000 American Express Membership Rewards points when you spend £3,000 within three months with the American Express Business Gold card
- 40,000 American Express Membership Rewards points when you spend £6,000 within three months with the American Express Business Platinum card
Whilst the American Express Business Platinum card does have a high annual fee (£650), it also comes with a number of travel benefits. These include:
- two Priority Pass cards for airport lounge access (each allowing two guests, so four people are covered)
- elite status in four major hotel loyalty programmes
- comprehensive travel insurance
- £300 per year of credit to spend on job advertisements with Indeed
- a free digital subscription to The Times and The Sunday Times, and
- £200 per year to spend at Amex Travel (which is basically free money for the sort of person who reads HfP!)
You can see the full list of benefits for the American Express Business Gold card here and the American Express Business Platinum card here.
Check the eligibility criteria for the sign-up bonuses carefully. You will still qualify for the Dell credit even if you don’t qualify for a new cardholder bonus.
Conclusion
If you can make good use of the Dell credit, either for yourself or for friends, family or charity, it offers a significant extra reason to get an American Express Business charge card. This is especially true with the American Express Business Gold card, which is free for the first year but still comes with £100 of Dell credit.
