Amex Member Week £75 off £300 Amex Travel spend deal is live – but excludes flights

Last week we flagged American Express ‘Member Week’, a new initiative this year which copies a successful US promotion

Amidst all of the competitions and other promotions, the one thing that seemed to offer genuine value was £75 cashback on a £300 Amex Travel spend.

The deal is now live so we have full clarity on how it works. The bad news is that flight bookings are excluded.

American Express Member Week

It is also very restricted, both in terms of the number of registrations allowed and the cards on which it appears.

The good news is that, if you are selected, you have until 20th December to make your purchase.

You MUST register for the offer before making a booking. You may, or may not, find it under the ‘Offers’ tab of your American Express card:

Amex Member Week

Here are the key things to note:

  • It’s restricted to 20,000 registrations, which is a tiny fraction of the UK American Express cardholder base. Move quickly if you want to register.
  • It does not seem to appear on co-brand travel cards (British Airways, Marriott), presumably due to conflicts with the co-brand partner – your best bet is Gold or Platinum, and I don’t even have it on my Platinum (it is on my wife’s Gold)
  • It only appears to be on primary cards, not supplementary cards
  • The £300 must be spent in a single transaction
  • You have until 20th December to make your booking, and there are no restrictions on when the hotel stay or car hire actually takes place
  • Only pre-paid hotel and car hire bookings count, not flights
  • As usual, hotel bookings via Amex Travel will be ineligible for status benefits or loyalty points, so the deal is best used for independent hotels or those where you have no interest in points

The bottom line is that it’s both better and worse than we expected. The inability to book flights is disappointing, as is the low number of registrations allowed, but the fact that you have until 20th December to book means that those who can register should be able to find a way of using it.

  • Mark says:

Are we confident the £200 Travel Credit counts towards the £300 spend? Essentially, if I was to find a hotel for exactly £300 on Amex Travel, that would mean I would only be paying £25 out of pocket with both Travel Credit and a cash back deal combined? I would have thought Travel Credit is excluded from this calculation…

    • Mark says:

Makes sense! I understand that on a regular Platinum the Travel Credit is used before the payment is made, so that would be different.

P.S.: always so impressed with your quick replies, what a man!

      • EvilGazebo says:

I’ve got as far as checkout with the £200 on my personal Plat and it explicitly states that I’ll be charged in full and get a £200 credit a few days later.

So like Rob says, I’m confident enough that I will get £275 back on anything >£300. I’m going to give it a go anyway!

  • Paul says:

Well I am just off the chat where the tone was patronising and mansplaining.

There was a absolute refusal to add the offer and it was made clear that if it was not showing then I was not eligible.

I think the web page wording has changed since yesterday though I sadly did not take a screen shot yesterday. Today it very definitely states only those eligible

  • jek says:

Just of the chat. The agent stated that anybody who has enrolled in the previous “Spend £300 or more, get £100 back” is not eligible for the new “Spend £300 and get £75 back”.

  • His Holyness says:

Got it on four of our primary ARCC. I doubt we will use it though being so little and not covering flights, but it’s good to have.

  • Mike Hunt says:

I am not really feeling that valued by Amex during this Member Week !

    • Russell G says:

Ditto and I’ve been a platinum card holder for nearly 2 decades now. What a marketing flop.

  • The real Swiss Tony says:

The execution of this campaign does seem fitting enough to once again ask the question…. Dear Amex, are you on glue….

  • Mike says:

The article title should be amended to “but excludes flights and most members”

  • Ruth says:

I have saved the £75 offer. It says a single eligible transaction. Tried to book 3 separate hotels totalling over £300. After the first one it said added to cart. But after the second one it also says added to cart. But there is no cart, it has just deleted the first hotel. Do frustrating.
