Use your American Express Platinum dining credit for an Ivy gift card

A valuable benefit that comes with The Platinum Card from American Express is £300 of annual dining credit. It makes a big dint in the annual membership fee.

Each calendar year – so it resets on 1st January – you receive:

  • £150 to spend in 180 or so UK restaurants
  • £150 to spend in 1,000+ international restaurants

You can spend the money over multiple visits to multiple restaurants if you wish. It doesn’t need to be spent in one go.

One of the most common questions asked in our forum is whether the £150 UK Platinum Dining credit can be used for a restaurant gift card. This is a handy way of using your credit if you don’t think you can make it to a participating restaurant before 31st December.

If you mean ‘a restaurant gift card’ you can order online then the answer is No.

However, if you want to use your £150 of UK Platinum Dining credit for a meal to enjoy next year, the most popular option is a gift card for ‘The Ivy’ group of restaurants.

You must buy ‘The Ivy’ gift cards in person to trigger the £150 Platinum dining credit. Do not buy them online because the dining credit won’t trigger.

You can learn more on the giftcard website here but remember – to get the £150 Platinum Dining credit to pay out, you must buy it in a participating branch of ‘The Ivy’.

PS. Remember that reader Tim has created an interactive map of restaurants where the Amex Platinum £150 dining credit can be used. Check it out here.

Maybe people can report back on locations that are selling the ‘right’ gift cards?

  • Chris says:

I was planning on buying £150 worth of gift cards from The Ivy Victoria. Reading above, it seems somewhat hit and miss that I will be getting the right gift cards and/or that Amex will honour the credit. Can anyone offer any reassurance? Thanks.

May be worth buying 2 £100 ivy gift cards. Get 2 bottles of champagne and only £100 spend needed if full voucher spend needs to trigger bottle.

  • Paul says:

Reporting back on my experience. Bought a £150 gift card from The Ivy nr Covent Garden. I was told that if we use it before 30 March we get a free bottle of champagne but the voucher itself is valid for a year.

However, I have not yet (nearly a week later) had the £150 Amex credit and I’m not now expecting it. Shame, but it was a chance worth taking.

    • Paul says:

So twice in two days I think I’ve posted too early (sorry folks) as I had an email today from Amex saying I’ve redeemed my local dining benefit. The credit hasn’t yet appeared but I’m now in hopeful mode.

Purchased an Ivy Gift card at start of year, enjoying a £20 bonus. So, £170. Ended up not using it. Imminent expiry. Has anyone bought a further gift card with a gift card? T&C would not appear to exclude. Easier to pop in to a nearby Ivy to do this than to find time in next few days for a booking.
