American Express is bringing back its cardmember lounge at Wimbledon

According to the Wimbledon website, the American Express cardmember lounge is returning for the 2023 tournament which starts next Monday.

You can see the details on the Wimbledon website here.

Because of the modest capacity inside, Amex keeps publicity about its lounge low key.

If you are wondering what it’s like, here are some photos from 2022 taken by reader Alex. Hopefully it will be sunnier this year!

Visit the American Express Wimbledon Cardmember Lounge

The American Express lounge is located in the Southern Village by Court 3.

Any American Express cardholder can enter the lounge, irrespective of the country where their card was issued.

Each cardholder can take up to two guests into the lounge.

If nothing has changed since last year, the lounge will not have any toilets. You have to leave the lounge and rejoin the queue to get back in, which is clearly not ideal.

You get a great view over the outside courts (rain permitting):

Here is a PR shot for 2023:

…. and an interior shot from 2022:

Whilst the lounge has a bar and serves snacks, these are not free. You get a 10% discount on your food and drink when you pay with an Amex card.

For 2023 there will a Ralph Lauren merchandise boutique inside the lounge. You can also pick up some free Amex goodies such as a radio to listen to match commentary. In previous years you have also been able to pick up water spray and branded fans.

An exclusive £20 cashback offer

There’s also a special cashback offer for purchases on site.  If you spend £120 or more in the grounds during the tournament on your card you’ll get £20 back.  You can only get the cashback once per card.

Registration is required. You should see this offer in the Amex app or on your online statement page.

Conclusion

Amex spends a lot of money on its Wimbledon lounge but it never fully delivers, in my view.

It’s a shame that food and drink is not free, but then it would only encourage more people to visit and to stay longer so it may end up being self defeating. I would have been tempted to offer fast track entry to Platinum cardholders, or at least a free drink voucher – some cardholders are more valuable than others at the end of the day.

That said, if it is crowded in the grounds – which it usually is – then, as long as nothing has changed this year, it is a decent spot to get out of the sun / rain and watch the play on the outside courts from the balcony.

Anyone know what time is last entry (approx.) to the venue? Have been given tickets for today’s qualifiers and couldn’t find the information on the website.

  • Chris W says:

What a strange brand activation. It looks like Amex signed up to a long-term lease/commitment, realised the space is too small to do much with, so are now trying to minimise their expenses each year operating it.

  • Michael C says:

V underwhelming. Took pic + left, then queues were insane.

  • Alex Sm says:

I went there in 2021 and enjoyed it very much! The ambience, the goodies (still using their elegantly small but powerful power bank) and the not-so-free gin cocktail for £8 – still much better price than underwhelming Pimm’s in the grounds! The queues are similar.

If you want a really free snack, be an HSBC customer and receive a voucher for strawberries and cream. Good value and simple scheme! Queues are minimal. See you there!

    • David says:

All change this year as Barclays have taken over with the free strawberries and cream offer (voucher stated as being available using the app or via collection of a paper voucher) plus other bits and bobs across a few locations inc. in ‘The Queue’ (see website for details).

There is also the potential for a free programme if you’re a Barclays Premier account holder, but only 200 per day are being given out which sounds quite a limited number to me.

As for the Amex lounge, I was disappointed last year to be held in a long queue in the pouring rain (for about an hour) with no idea about how long it might take to get in, whilst several of Amex’s guests were seemingly directed in with zero wait. When we were eventually able to go in, there appeared to be plenty of spare space inside. It made it appear to be a two tier space where they let in one cardholder and guest every 10 mins or so but wasn’t advertised as such. Perhaps the queue would be easier later in the day (once the tennis starts…) or in better weather!

As I recall, last year the Amex lounge closed late afternoon; I’m fairly confident it was before the end of play around the grounds.

      • Blenz101 says:

I don’t think you can complain that Amex allowed their invited guests direct access over regular cardholders and their guests on a freebie.

As for the queue, it’s not a theme park with advertised wait times. Just ask a few people ahead of you how long they have been waiting and if things are moving, not hard to judge with that information.

  • William Shortall says:

I went last year and was left disappointed. The balcony cannot be used for the public which seems a missed opportunity as you have a great view of the outer courts.
