Thank you to everyone who came to our Summer Party last Tuesday evening at the Renaissance St Pancras hotel.

This time last week I was in full organiser mode for the HfP Summer Party. We were – for the third party in a row – at the Renaissance thanks to its big outdoor terrace.

This year the party was sponsored by SeatSpy who brought some smart branding for the bar and stage area:

SeatSpy’s sponsorship meant we could serve some delicious canapes and cupcakes. Whilst I was too busy manning the party check-in desks to sample any, Rob tells me the lobster rolls were very tasty ….

For the first 30 minutes or so we had a little pre-party with our industry guests. Here is Sinead with Julia from BA Holidays:

We had over 100 travel trade guests in total this year. By all accounts they enjoyed being grilled on travel and loyalty by you all!

We had representatives from Accor, Aer Lingus, Air Astana, American Express, ANA, British Airways, Barclaycard, Capital On Tap, Cathay Pacific, Collinson, Currensea, DragonPass, Emirates, Etihad, Eurostar, Expedia, Global Airlines, Heathrow Express, Heathrow Rewards, Hilton, Hyatt, IAG Loyalty, IHG, London City Airport, Malaysia Airlines, Marriott, Nectar, Norse Atlantic, Plaza Premium, points.com, Priority Pass, Qatar Airways, trip.com, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Red, Virgin Voyages, Vistara, Wheely and Wizz Air in the room, so there were plenty of people to chat with.

Here is Rob with the Virgin Flying Club team:

The SeatSpy team were decked out in branded black polos, which hopefully made it easier for anyone to find them if they wanted to chat:

The raffle

We had around 500 people there but it never feels too crowded until we make everyone come back inside for the raffle at 8pm! This photo provides a bit of scale to the event:

I had the pleasure of MCing for the night. Rob gave a very short speech:

…. as did Paul from SeatSpy.

Malaysia Airlines provided the headline prize of two business class tickets to Malaysia, and without really trying we ended up with ten more prizes from Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt and Priority Pass. The remaining prizes included:

Duncan, who had travelled especially from Dundee, was our first lucky winner and was understandably chuffed! Here we are, with Daniel Bainbridge from Malaysia Airlines handing over the prize:

Duncan said he was planning to take his sister on a trip of a lifetime. He is a long time reader and has posted more than 300 comments over the the past six years, including this one after the party:

I’m the very lucky star prize winner, so without an Oscars length speech, I’d like to thank the HfP team, and the very generous sponsors for an amazing prize.

I was (and still am) completely shocked that I had the lucky ticket, and didn’t get too much sleep on the Sleeper train home to Dundee! Had a great night chatting with MariaJ and aman1384 too.

Only one prize ended up being redrawn after the original winner failed to make themselves known!

We managed to squeeze in a quick winners group photo:

After the raffle the hotel staff brought out over 500 SeatSpy-branded cupcakes – they were so popular that by the time I got round to having some they were all gone!

Things quietened down towards the end of the night, although there were still 100+ after our official closing time of 9pm. It was during this time that I managed to talk to a number of HfP regulars including Reney. I also bumped into frequent commenter Blair Waldorf Salad.

To round it all off, Rob, Sinead and I managed to get our first group photo together – despite working together for the past ~4 years!

As always, a massive thank you to all of you that came along. None of this would be possible if it weren’t for you. Thanks also to SeatSpy, whose sponsorship meant we could have a party of this scale in the first place, and all our raffle prize sponsors.

See you next year – if we can find a date which doesn’t clash with Euro 2024!

  • The Savage Squirrel says:

Hope everyone had a great night. Congratulations Duncan, enjoy your trip!

  • Cat says:

It looks like a great evening! Congrats to the lucky winners!

I’m hoping the do next year doesn’t clash with my sixth form leavers boat party. I missed the previous summer party due to getting covid a couple of days before. In fact, the last HfP do I went to was in January 2020, after which I spent the next 2 weeks panicking slightly about the fact I’d attended a frequent flyer event, right at the start of a pandemic…

    • polly says:

Hi Cat, you’ve survived the boat night then, with all those teenagers!.. we had a great time at that last hfp winter party. Wish our photos of you doing the Harry Potter staircase were less blurry, tho! It was the last one l attended too, as we were away for the last two. But hopefully we will have a chance for next summer… cheers!

      • Cat says:

Cheers @polly! I hope to see you then too!

To me, that will always be the Wannabe staircase, and the photos were appropriately blurry! 🤣

  • SammyJ says:

I absolutely love the genuine look of joy on Duncan’s face! Would be great to hear how he uses the tickets.

    • Iain says:

Yes, it’s very pleasing that it went to a regular. Hopefully he does a Trip Report and both he and his sister have a great time.

      • Cat says:

Yes it is good that it went to someone who actually regularly contributes to the forums, rather than just someone who heard they had a 1/500 probability of winning business class flights to Malaysia if they go to this event.

I’m quite looking forward to hearing all about it too!

        • Rhys says:

It’s basically impossible for compers to attend our parties since tickets sell so quickly. Everyone there is a reader or a partner/friend of a reader.

    • Duncan says:

      That’s very kind of you!
I’ve picked up a Malaysia travel guidebook, and have started to see where is a must to visit. I’m no writer, but I’ll be sure to post afterwards.

      • Cat says:

If you have any interest in the great outdoors, hiking, wildlife, or scuba diving, Borneo is incredible!

        Have a blast Duncan!

      • polly says:

        Duncan,

You can ask plenty of questions of us lot about Malaysia, and other close places… you could even hop on a low cost carrier or use avios to go to Bali for a few days… Michael C and I know a great hotel in Bali for £47 a night..Bintang Bali Beach Resort, just if you wanted to mix it up a bit. But, so much to see and do. What a Fantastic win.. congrats again…
In fact we could start a link “Duncan’s Malaysia Trip” joking of course!

        • Duncan says:

Ha ha! Thanks Polly, there’s so much to see that’s close by too.
I was thinking of Kota Kinabalu, and maybe a wee side trip to the beach elsewhere 🙂

  • Alex Sm says:

Well done Rhys and team and was great to chat in person!

  • Mark says:

It was another great night. However I whoever paid for the food was robbed! I didn’t see any all evening, well I saw empty trays and that was it. We didn’t get a single item.

    • Rob says:

To be fair there was absolutely no shortage of food wherever I was. Must have been offered at least 10 times (I think we ordered 3-4 canapes per person, plus cupcakes.) Didn’t get a cupcake though.

    • Lady London says:

Never, ever got even the sight of a dessert at an HfP party.

They’re always promised but never seen.

I donate my drink as I’m happy with water but it would be nice if it was possible to secure a dessert.

      • Lady London says:

and never got near a canapé either but those are less interesting than a dessert for me, I have seen the last canapé or two disappear off a tray from a very great distance though.

      • Rob says:

The cupcakes were out from 8pm, no excuse for not getting one! Some were out on the display at the back from 6pm. They were by the doors as you came in. There were definitely 500 because we ordered and delivered them ourselves from a specialist supplier due to the need to get an edible SeatSpy logo on them.

I have a photo timestamped 8.27 of my daughter eating one so they were definitely there late on.

        • meta says:

Next time perhaps hand out one as people arrive. If you ordered one for each guest, there is no excuse really to just put them out like that.

          • Rob says:

Who wants a cupcake and a glass of wine at the same time?!

It’s not ‘one per guest’, we just ordered roughly the same number as we had guests. Two different things. Given that we were handing out free lobster rolls at the other end of the room, anyone focusing on the cupcakes was making a major error 🙂

          • Rhys says:

            Absolutely not.

The arrivals process is already busy enough without adding an extra step. Who do you propose hands them out? The hotel already had 25 staff working our event.

The truth is that the cupcakes were there the entire night 🙂 anyone who didn’t get one was clearly pre-occupied chatting to other guests rather than on the prowl for food.

    • Reney says:

Best to stand where the food was coming out 😉

    • Rhys says:

The hotel said they were delivering food from 3-4 different points, including onto the terrace!

If you wanted a cupcake you should’ve headed to where I said they were 😉

    • AJA says:

I did see a few empty trays when i was standing out on the terrace but then changed position nearer to the bar and got several bites at the cherry so to speak.

Also got a cupcake which was a sugar rush it was so sweet but didn’t hear Rhys explain where they were but another attendee kindly pointed me in the right direction. There were still quite a few left.

I had a great evening, thanks HfP for organising and congrats to the prize winners

      • Alex Sm says:

Yes cupcakes were in abundance and within reach but I heard people refusing them as ‘pure sugar’. I’m not a big fun of 🧁 but had one and used it in a photo too

    • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

I saw canapés but they were too fancy for my tastes. So I had 2 cupcakes in lieu of dinner. It was my birthday that day so I felt I had licence to do so.

      • Rhys says:

Perhaps we will contract with Greggs for catering next year 😉

        • The Savage Squirrel says:

Well 100,000 Virgin points does get everyone a sausage roll each…

        • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

Excuse yourself, I am far too snobby for Greggs. I’ll just eat beforehand.

  • Skywalker says:

Looks like it was a great night and congrats to all winners 😁

Bigger venue next time, please HfP team!

  • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

I must admit it wasn’t till I read the article that I realised the people in the matching polo shirts were SeatSpy reps. On the night I thought they were custodial staff. Perhaps the idea of differently coloured badges would work better. SeatSpy could have been gold as the premier sponsor; silver for others who contributed a prize, and an offputting beige for those who did not contribute one.

  • Simon says:

Well done team – you’ve curated a great community. Congratulations Duncan!
