Air Canada has just announced a major new expansion of its flights to Europe, including additional services to both London and Manchester for next summer. It hopes to fly 100% of the capacity it flew in 2019 – a full recovery four years after the pandemic paused flights.

Flights from London to Toronto will increase to four times a day from April to October 2024, an increase from the three offered this year.

Flights from Manchester will increase to six weekly fights in the peak summer months from June to September, whilst flights to Edinburgh will enjoy a longer season, starting on 1st March and running until January 2025.

Air Canada expands flights to the UK

According to Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President of Revenue and Network Planning at Air Canada,

“Air Canada saw a tremendous rebound in international flying this past summer, particularly on the trans-Atlantic, and we expect Europe will remain popular next year. In anticipation of this, we are expanding our flying schedule to offer customers more choice and flexibility as they begin to plan their 2024 holidays.

The centrepiece of today’s announcement is our new Montreal-Madrid flight. This will be the only year-round service between Montreal and the Spanish capital, complementing our long-standing Toronto-Madrid flights, and offering compelling options for leisure customers and also returning business travellers.”

We have yet to review Air Canada’s international business class, which it calls Signature Class. Our review of the Maple Leaf Lounge at Heathrow Terminal 2 is here.

Toronto and Montreal rank as the third and fifth busiest airports in North America when measured by daily transatlantic seats. To be perfectly honest, that’s a far bigger operation than I imagined!

From the UK and Ireland, you have the following choices on Air Canada:

From London Heathrow Terminal 2:

  • Calgary – once daily
  • Halifax – once daily
  • Montreal – up two twice daily
  • Toronto – four times daily
  • Vancouver – once daily

From Manchester:

  • Toronto – six weekly

From Edinburgh:

  • Toronto – up to once daily (seasonal)

From Dublin:

  • Montreal – thrice weekly
  • Toronto – once daily
  • Vancouver – four times weekly

It’s just a shame that Air Canada have not reinstated the daytime flight from Toronto – London with the addition of their 4th flight per day like it was pre COVID.

I really do hate night flights and the daytime flight means no you can work on the plane (or relax), then go home and get into bed!

    • Richie says:

Yes and a daytime flight from Montreal would be appreciated.

    • Andrew. says:

You can still connect from Toronto to their Halifax daytime service which leaves at 11:00ish and gets into Heathrow around 21:00.

It might even be the only 737Max8 on a non-stop transatlantic.

      • lev441 says:

Yes but they price that non-direct daytime flight at a premium compared to the direct flights – and I believe it’s not real long haul business class on the Max aircraft either…

      • Derek says:

I’m pretty sure WestJet flies the same 737Max8 from Halifax, but they only go to Gatwick, now. However, AC has no business class from Halifax, so I don’t see the chance for doing any work!
When I was regularly flying Halifax-London, I preferred the overnight flight. I’d be arriving on one of the first flights of the morning at LHR, and immigration was a breeze. The 9pm arrival makes it difficult to catch a train to Plymouth, so it’s National Express 🙁

        • tony says:

I think WestJet now only serve Calgary from London?

And the AC flight has US style domestic First seats up front, which the website suggests should be sold as PE fares, but for the few dates I looked at they were sold out??

  • Novice says:

Why is it always peak season flights for Man and nothing else. So annoying.🙄

  • Ricardos-Alpert says:

Should i be worried booking a virgin flights on KLM if there are any delays issues? I’ve heard horror stories that virgin / KLM will just tell you to contact other airline and neither helpful.

Obviously if no delays seems great, but just wondering if on the off chance something goes wrong is it worth the cash saving.

    • Rob says:

Can be an issue on redemptions to anywhere except the US but the transatlantic JV means that it is all the same legal entity running VS, AF and KLM transatlantic.

      • newbz says:

I think they pool revenue, yes, but it’s surely not the same legal entity running these flights?

        • Nick says:

It’s not, but if they’re anything like BA/AA, customer benefits are an enormous part of the case they put before competition authorities to secure approval to share revenue. One of the elements to this is enhanced customer protection in disruption.

  • Neal says:

The KLM offer – is it cumulative or one transaction only?

Asking because I’m booking for two and the total cost is over £1000, however knowing KLM it will hit the statement as two charges
