Eurostar will run a huge points seat sale next month

Eurostar will be running a big Club Eurostar points sale next month.

It is surprisingly generous. The discounts are substantial and the travel period covers virtually all of 2024.

There’s only one snag – transfers from American Express Membership Rewards to Club Eurostar are still down. I was told on Friday that it will take another 2-3 weeks to bring them back.

Unless Amex transfers restart, the sale is restricted to those who already have enough points.

Club Eurostar reward points sale

Club Eurostar has never run any sort of points sale before AFAIK, yet alone one this generous.

It is possible that it is being done in response to the ‘no notice’ points devaluation when Club Eurostar was launched last year. The sale reduces reward prices to what they were before October 2023, adjusted for the 20% points uplift everyone got as part of the restructuring.

When is the sale and when can you travel?

According to the email sent to some members:

  • you can book between 6th and 16th February
  • you can travel between 6th February and 3rd November
  • you can also book for travel on ex-Thalys services in Europe, for travel between 6th February and 7th September

What will the Club Eurostar sale pricing be?

These are chunky discounts, especialy as you can redeem on EVERY train on every day, with no blackouts, as long as cash seats are bookable.

Standard

  • 600 Club Eurostar points each way (usually 1,000 points)
  • 900 Club Eurostar points each way (usually 1,500 points) for trains where the allocation of regular priced reward seats has run out
Eurostar redemptions points seat sale

Standard Premier (‘Comfort’ on ex-Thalys trains)

  • 1,200 Club Eurostar points each way (usually 2,000 points)
  • 1,500 Club Eurostar points each way (usually 2,500 points) for trains where the allocation of regular priced reward seats has run out

Business Premier

  • 1,800 Club Eurostar points each way (usually 3,000 points) – this pricing applies to all services

Are there any special terms and conditions?

It seems not, based on the email teaser.

The only thing to remember is that you cannot cancel a Club Eurostar redemption. You can change the date but not cancel it. It’s not clear if the redemption would reprice at the normal rate if you change the date after the offer has ended.

We’ll remind you of this deal when it launches.

Let’s hope that American Express Membership Rewards transfers can be brought back in time, since these would be good value redemptions. The transfer rate is 15:1 so you’re looking at 18,000 Amex points for a return Standard ticket.

It would be ironic if this generous promotion got Eurostar ill-will from customers because they couldn’t do the Amex transfer they needed in order to top-up their account to take part ….

The allocation of regular priced reward seats is pretty simple to work out as it directly depends on cash prices. When searching for a one way ticket, if cash prices are up to £126 in standard class, 1000 points are required. If more than £126, it’s 1500 points.

  • Alastair says:

I wonder why they are doing this. It’s not as if the trains aren’t busy.

Perhaps use of the programme has collapsed due to the ridiculous overnight no-notice doubling of pricing (waaaay above the equivalent compound inflation of cash fares during the last couple of years, which was one of the feeble excuses they used at the time).

  • Eliot says:

As a data point, no point calling to request a refund to rebook or pro rata redeposit! I spent 8000 points for two of us to go to Paris in Standard Premier return on Friday, so would be 3200 points richer had I not been so keeno to book! A flat no when I called, which is both understandable and infuriating.

    • Lady London says:

This promotion was mentioned in our HeadforPoints Forums at least 2 or 3 times by commenters in the past two weeks or so. Certainly before last Friday.

      Such a pity.

  • Jenny says:

Does anyone know what would happen if you were to book a ‘placeholder’ ticket at the reduced price and then attempt to change the date? Would you keep the discount rate or have to pay a supplement? Thanks

    • Rob says:

I suspect a date change would be OK as its a benefit of the ticket. The T&C will probably address this at the time though. Remember that you can’t refund your redemption.

Are the amex point transfers back on ?
