News in brief:

The closure plans for the Virgin Upper Class Wing have changed

Last week we covered the closure of the British Airways First Wing and the Virgin Atlantic Upper Class Wing security channels, as part of the process of upgrading the security scanners at Heathrow.

Whilst the Terminal 5 First Wing closure is progressing as planned (the security lane will be closed until March / April), there has been a change to the Virgin Atlantic plan.

This is what is currently happening:

  • Now until 21st February: the Upper Class Wing drop off, check in and Private Security channel are open but there is a temporary entrance into the Upper Class Wing from the terminal. The only people impacted are those who come into Terminal 3 via the main entrance (for example anyone arriving by public transport) and want to use the dedicated security line in the Wing.
  • 22nd-28th February: there will be a full closure of the Upper Class Wing
  • 29th February to 13th May: the Upper Class Wing will be open for drop off and check in but the private security channel will be closed – you will be redirected into the main terminal to clear security

You can check for the latest updates on this page of the Virgin Atlantic website.

ibis Styles Paignton now open

ibis Styles Paignton hotel is now open

We don’t cover the seaside resort of Paignton in Devon much on HfP, unsurprisingly, but it does now have two brand new hotels.

A Mercure opened last year, and an ibis Styles opened yesterdaywebsite here. These are both part of Accor Live Limitless.

The 121-room ibis Styles Paignton features “a design that draws inspiration from the surrounding seaside landscapes, as well as being home to all-day dining restaurant Deller’s Cafe and an ice-cream parlour.” It is the first ibis Styles in the UK to have a dry spa, with three treatment rooms.

You can find out more about the ibis Styles Paignton on its website here, and the website for the adjacent (same ownership) Mercure is here.

Ahhh – beautiful Paignton. A destination for us when borders where closed back through the Pandemic (with the moon on purple background providing accommodation).

Lovely base for exploring the area, nice coastal walks, the steam railway towards Dartmouth amongst other local attractions. Good to see some other brands getting in on the action.

Have to agree it’s great for a break! Found some VERY nice B&Bs, the child loved the “loud” side to it for evening strolls on the pier, and daytime was, as you say, Totnes/Brixham/Dartmouth/Greenway House (fabulous).

When you get to Paignton, Torquay etc, dont stop, carry on south for 20 miles or so to the South Hams, its a different world…

  • letBAgonesbe says:

On the Gatwick express website it shows trains are running to Gatwick airport on the 21st.

    • Pbdj says:

      On the Gatwick express site

“Buses replace trains between East Croydon / Purley / Reigate / Tonbridge and Redhill / Gatwick Airport on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 January“

      And then under that header:
“ No Gatwick Express services will run.”

  • richard helliwell says:

trains ARE running between London Victoria and Gatwick airport, diverted via Horsham and taking an hour and a quarter.. every 30 minutes.

    • Rob says:

Thanks. Updated the sub-heading to be more accurate.

    • ADS says:

according to the timetable the train via Horsham takes about 75 minutes … and the train/bus via East Grinstead also takes about 75 minutes

although sometimes they pad the schedule for bus replacement services

      • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

If you take the Horsham train then that’s one less change you have to make which with luggage is going to be less hassle.

Just remember at Victoria to get on a carriage farthest from the ticket barrier as there is usually more room. Few years ago I had to get a similar service the first few carriages were jam packed with people putting cases on the table yet train as empty at the front.

  • roberto says:

I am flying into Gatwick on Sunday and it appears that trains into London Victoria go at 26 mins and 56 mins past the hour most of the day.

If I can that’s the route I will take however if I just miss one I will take the bus to East Grinstead and pick up the train from there.

Flying Wizz in and Vueling* back the next evening , train closures, snow and a funeral – what could possibly go wrong???

    * Vueling bus passengers 23 hours to Bilbao earlier this month see https://simpleflying.com/vueling-replace-flight-23-hour-bus-journey/

  • Lady London says:

It’s another winter Sunday at Gatwick. Done far, far too many of them and their hellish train problems.

  • Faze says:

Hey Rob, I just flew out on Virgin Upper Class via the Wing and it certainly was not operating as normal.. We were redirected to main terminal for security.. rather chaotic to say the least.. In hindsight getting the Lizzy line down there instead would’ve led to more enjoable time in Clubhouse.

It seems they’ve tried something and then decided to pause the whole thing for a while?
