How many British Airways Avios points do you need to fly to a particular city?

It is surprisingly tricky to find out how many Avios are required for a particular route.  You need to go to ba.com, track down the ‘Avios Spending Calculator’ page and then type in your destination and preferred travel class.  It is a bit of a drag, even if it is working – which it hasn’t been for months.

This table should simplify the process.  It lists British Airways destinations alphabetically with pricing to / from London.  Prices are one-way.

There are ‘fewer Avios, more cash’ options too – and they may be better value

British Airways, historically, has added a ‘taxes and charges’ sum to Avios redemption pricing.

In stages between 2020 and 2022, this was changed. Avios pricing was increased BUT the cash element was reduced. You now pay a fixed figure, as low as 50p each way on short haul flights.

Other pricing options are available, requiring fewer Avios but more cash. You can see these on the final page of the ba.com booking process.

The only exception is if you are using an old British Airways American Express 2-4-1 companion voucher issued before September 2021. If you have one of these vouchers, read this HfP article to learn why you do not see alternative pricing options. This problem will go away naturally as the old style vouchers expire during 2023.

For short haul, you will generally get better value by NOT choosing the 50p option. The best option is usually the one which has fees of £17.50 each way in Economy or £25 each way in Business.

What’s the easiest way of knowing which Avios and cash combination is best?

I use ‘the 1p system’ which I outline here.

Put simply, assume that an Avios point is worth 1p. For each of the 5-6 Avios and cash combinations shown, convert the Avios into cash at 1p per point and see which option is cheapest in total. This will help you decide which option is best for you.

For example, 10,000 Avios + £200 is a poorer choice than 20,000 Avios + £50 if you use my ‘1p per Avios’ valuation. Of course if you only have 10,000 Avios then you’ll be choosing that option anyway – you may also want to choose that option to conserve Avios for future trips.

What about First Class redemptions?

Whilst it’s possible to redeem Avios for First Class tickets, British Airways treats them slightly differently and the pricing structure is not the same as for other classes.

Let me say again: there are other pricing options available for each route which require fewer Avios but more cash. Some of these options may even be better value, especially on short haul routes, if you are not using a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 companion voucher.

How to earn Avios from UK credit cards (January 2024)

    Probably time consuming, but how about a table with which combination of Avios & Cash is best value?

      Would vary depending on whether you used a 241. BA also changes the options from week to week depending on its desire for cash that day.

      Last one I booked was aggressively generous if you took ‘lots of cash, few Avios’ so I assumed a loan was due!

            Wow! Had no idea. Although I had an inkling something was up because it felt like the number of points and cash required seemed to be jumping around without much logic. I thought I was going mad and put it down to another small devaluation having taken place. So the only constant would be the base figures you gave in the chart, which are dreadful value for money when flying within Europe.

            The figure in the article won’t change.

            However, as well as – say – 180,000 + £450 Club to Antigua, return, the other options will move around depending on BA’s need for £. One day you might see 100,000 + £950 (sensible to refuse) as an alternative, another day 100,000 + £750 (sensible to accept).

    Where does the data in the table come from? How did you get the numbers? Why do you have Helsinki in the chart when BA haven’t flown there for years? If you fly on Finnair is that still a “British Airways destination”? I never see AY flights with a BA flight number when redeeming avios, they are shown as AY flights.

      It’s done manually. I spent a good part of my Thursday sorting this out 🙂

      The routes are still priced based on mileage zones. New routes we do a quick mock booking to confirm which zone they are in.

      I did consider deleting Helsinki, but it’s also one of those routes we may see return at some point so I left it in. Likewise I’ve potentially missed a couple of new routes or forgotten to delete old routes that no longer operate (shorthaul ops change a lot)

      Lots of searching and using applied knowledge of the BA Avios Bands so you don’t have to search every destination.

      Why not? It’s a destination many HfPers use

      Does it matter ?

      When booking partner flights with Avios fares they use the flight number of the operating airline rather than the BA codeshare,

    With a 241 is it better to use more avios so essentially the higher avios is halved? Or is it only valid on the middle level redemption?

      Someone made a comment on a previous version when I asked similar, you can save the webpage to your computer and then ask Microsoft Excel to import the HTML file.

    I recently redeemed a Barclays upgrade voucher for a trip to Barcelona. I was only offered a high Avios , low £ redemption. I telephoned BA to check whether what I was being offered online was correct and was told by several different agents that it was the only option for this particular upgrade promotion..
    Has anyone else had this experience?
